Vilnius

With a population of just over half a million people, the capital of Lithuania has recently thrown open its doors to the Western World. A UNESCO world heritage site, Old Vilnius dates from the 16th Century. This can be confirmed from the Gates of the Dawn, which is located in the Old Town.

A complex history, where Slavs, Tartars, Germans, Jews, Christians, and native Lithuanians are included in this provocative mix of a truly multi-cultural society, it has made this city what it is today. So complex is Vilnius as a city, Vilnius, at one stage, became known as Rome of the North, and, to Yiddish speakers, as the Jerusalem of Lithuania.

You can hear the sounds of Russian, English, Polish, and of course Lithuanian languages in this really awe-inspiring Baltic capital. The old and the new, the east and the west, as the Lithuanian tourist board states: “this city has real unforgettable harmony and charm that only Lithuanians can offer.”
