Barcelona is the vibrant capital of Catalonia. Soak up the medieval atmosphere of Barcelona gothic quarter. Under the rule of General Franco the Catalan language and culture was suppressed. However in 1975 hme rule was granted to this lively city where nowadays Catalan rather than Spanish can be heard on the streets. The splendid church of the Sagrada Familia, the Olympicadium, La Ramblas, (Barcelonas famous shopping street) are just a few of the places that omake Barcelona one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe. For art lovers a definite visit is recommended to the Museu Picasso where you can view some of Picassos most famous sketches and paintings. The port area offers some excellent restaurants, you must try an authentic seafood or paella dish, washed down by one of the local wines.

Barcelona airport is situated some thirty minutes away from the city centre. The train fare costs under ten pounds, and there is an airport bus service which departs every fifteen minutes. A taxi will cost approximately twelve pounds. There is an excellent public transport network in the city and taxis are always plentiful.
